Most cameras can technically record at night — but that doesn’t mean the footage is useful.
We recently captured two videos using a Dahua CCTV camera installed at a site that gets plenty of after-dark animal visitors (including one especially bold possum).
Both videos were recorded in the middle of the night with no extra lighting — and both the standard night mode and full-colour mode looked fantastic, just in different ways.
Night Mode vs Full-Colour Mode: What’s the Difference?
Dahua cameras are known for their WizSense and WizMind technologies, which offer strong performance in low-light.
But what stood out here wasn’t just visibility — it was the clarity and colour accuracy at night.
In the standard IR night mode video, the image is clean, well-exposed, and you can clearly see the movement.
But in the full-colour mode, you can actually make out the colour of the possum’s fur, the surrounding leaves, and the subtle tones in the environment — all in the middle of the night.
It’s the kind of detail that could matter in a real-world event — especially in applications like:
- Identifying clothing colours
- Recognising vehicles by paint or branding
- Noticing subtle movements that might be lost in monochrome footage
Why It Matters
For clients who need CCTV systems that actually show what’s happening—not just that something happened—this is where Dahua’s cameras really shine.
Whether it’s for a business, venue, rural site, or residential setup, being able to get colour footage at night can be the difference between guessing and knowing.
